Consequently in 1837 he completed and published a volume entitled " The Pictorial Album, or Cabinet of Paintings," which was published by Chapman and Hall. It is a small quarto Volume, neatly bound, and contains a title vignette and ten full plates, appearing to be mounted on a tinted paper. Baxter tinted the paper himself by using a smooth plate of copper to receive the colour or tint of ink, printing the same by the Letterpress method. This book ranks as one of the rare items in book production, being the first book produced and published in England entirely illustrated with pictures printed in colours. Life and Environment Baxter's fame was now spreading, insomuch that it was necessary for him to take several apprentices, amongst them being Harrison Weir, who also was a native of Lewes. Baxter's fame having now become assured, and the de- mand steadily rising for his productions, it will hardly be necessary for me to tell you that further large additions to his plant would Lave to be made if he were to cope with it. This would need an ad- ditional capital outlay; and here again the help which the late Mr. Robert Harrild had extended to him at the com-
