Mr. Frederick Harrild tells me that Baxter's father and mother lived over their business premises when George was born, the house being No. 37, High Street. Perhaps you will think the following is a slight digression, but I was interested and thought you would be in the article which appeared in Book Auction Records in 1917 by Mr. A. Cecil Piper (City Librarian, Winchester), in which he tells us that Baxter's birthplace looms largely in Sussex bibliography, and that " the earliest date he has been able to trace is 1698, when we find Thos. Norman, bookseller in Lewes, mentioned in the imprint of ' The Christian Faith concerning the Holy Trinity.' This book was printed in London for J. Wyat. The first printing press established at Lewes was that of the brothers William and Arthur Lee, who established the ' Lewes Journal,' afterwards the ' Sussex Advertiser,' in 1745; this was then the only newspaper in the County. William Lee printed at Lewes, in 1756, a ' Sermon preached on February 6th, 1756, by N. Farriano,' which seems to be the earliest book printed in the Sussex capital. It is interesting to note that in 1810 paper mills were erected in Lewes near the Pells, by Messrs. Molineux, Johnson and A. Lee."
