For the Holy Spirit was not promised to the suc- cessors of Peter, that by his revelation they might declare new doctrine, but that through his assistance ROMAN CATHOLICISM the communion of Saints : they might preserve holily and expound faithfully the revelation or deposit of faith delivered through the Apostles. PETER 75 I steadfastly hold tliat there is a Purgatory, and that the souls therein detained are helped hy the suffrages of the faithful. (6) I also affirm that the power of granting Indulgences was left by Christ in the Church, and that the use of them is most wholesome to Christian people. (8) Lik ewise that the Saints reign-
