It moreover declares, that although, as hath been already said, our Redeemer, in that Last Supper, insti- tuted, and delivered to the apostles this sacrament, in two species, yet ought it to be acknowledged, that Christ whole and entire and a true sacrament is received under either species alone ; and that therefore, as re- gards the fruit thereof, they who receive one species alone are not defrauded of any grace necessary to salvation. [Chap. 3.] PREPARATION TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT If it is unseemly for any one to approach to any of the sacred functions unless he approach holily; assuredly, the more the holiness and divinity of this heavenly sacrament are understood by a Christian, the more diligently ought he to give heed that he ap- proach not to receive it but with great reverence and holiness, especially as we read in the Apostle those words full of terror : He that eateth and drinketh REVERENCE TO THE SACRAMENT 43 unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself. Wherefore, he who would communicate, ought to recall to mind the precept of the Apostle : Let a man prove himself. Now ecclesiastical usage declares that neces- sary proof to be, that no one, conscious to himself of mortal sin, how T contrite soever he may seem to him- self, ought to approach to the Sacred Eucharist without previous sacramental confession.
